The Print Project is a collaboration between Museum Plantin-Moretus and Supercollect. Twenty artists were asked to design a print inspired by the (online) woodblock collection of Plantin-Moretus.

As one of the twenty designers, I discovered the extensive collection of the museum and was immediately inspired by all the floral illustrations. I wanted to create tension between ornamental and clean (letter) shapes. I started out with the layout of a playing card and decided to work with the letter Q. Not only an elegant and versatile letter, but also a reference to “the Queen” in a card deck.

The final artwork is an ambigram that illustrates the contrast between a modern letter shape, ornamental details and an appropriate reference to the balance I pursue in my own work between illustration and type design.
